Research Interests

My research interest in the field of DNA break repair began in college, where I was investigating a role of S. cerevisiae ULS1 in double-strand break (DSB) repair via homologous recombination (HR). My current research in the Sekelsky lab is focused on understanding how cells avoid mitotic crossovers that could lead to loss of heterozygosity and cancer. We propose that during DSB repair, helicases act upon repair intermediates to prevent double Holliday junction formation and the break is repaired using synthesis-dependent strand annealing (SDSA). I chose human cell and yeast models to test this hypothesis and have built the first assay to quantify SDSA events in these organisms.
