When one ponders Catharsis, one encounters a paradox: Did the autoclave destroy something or create something? After all, the process is used both to annihilate life within biohazard waste, rendering it suitable for disposal, but also to annihilate life in solutions like growth media, thereby creating the condition of sterility and rendering them useful.
